Overview

Experience the beauty of Mount Rinjani on a rewarding two-day trekking adventure to Senaru Crater Rim, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Lombok. This journey is designed for travelers who want to discover Rinjani's volcanic landscape, experience camping in the mountains, and enjoy incredible views without attempting the challenging summit climb.

Your adventure begins in Senaru Village, where the trail leads through a protected tropical rainforest filled with towering trees, tropical birds, and wildlife. As you gain elevation, the forest gradually opens into a rugged mountain landscape with sweeping views across northern Lombok.

The highlight of this trek is reaching Senaru Crater Rim at 2,641 meters above sea level, where the enormous volcanic caldera reveals breathtaking views of Segara Anak Lake, Mount Baru Jari, and the surrounding mountain peaks.

Spend the evening watching the sunset from the crater rim, enjoy freshly prepared meals at your campsite, and wake up to beautiful sunrise views before returning to Senaru Village.

At Jou Trekking, we believe a great mountain adventure is about more than reaching a destination. It's about enjoying the journey, discovering the natural environment, and sharing meaningful experiences along the way. That's why we organize small-group treks with a maximum of four participants, allowing our guides to provide more personal attention throughout the adventure.

Day 1 – Senaru Village to Senaru Crater Rim

Senaru Village (601 m) → Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m)

  • Trekking Duration: Approximately 6–7 hours of walking; allow additional time for meals and rest stops.
  • Walking Distance: Approximately 9 km.
  • Elevation Gain: Approximately 2,040 m.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
  • Accommodation: Overnight Camping.

07:00 AM – Meet Your Trekking Team

Start your morning with breakfast at Jou Trekking Guesthouse in Senaru. This is also an opportunity to meet your local trekking guide and the porters who will accompany you throughout the journey.

Before leaving, your guide will check that everyone has the necessary equipment, drinking water, and personal belongings. We will then travel to the official Senaru trekking entrance to complete the required check-in procedures.

08:00 AM – Enter the Tropical Rainforest

Your first steps into Mount Rinjani National Park take you beneath the canopy of one of Lombok's most beautiful mountain forests. Unlike the exposed volcanic terrain found at higher elevations, this section of the trek is surrounded by tall trees, thick vegetation, and the sounds of wildlife.

The trail climbs steadily, with a combination of gentle slopes, natural steps, and steeper sections. As you walk, your guide can share local knowledge about the forest, the mountain environment, and the surrounding communities.

There is no need to rush. Our small-group approach allows everyone to maintain a comfortable pace while enjoying the experience.

10:00 AM – A Short Rest in the Forest

After approximately two hours of walking, we take a short break at a suitable resting point along the trail. This is a good opportunity to drink water, enjoy a snack, and recover before continuing uphill.

The rainforest provides plenty of shade, although the humid conditions and continuous ascent can make this section physically demanding. Your guide will monitor the group's progress and adjust the pace when necessary.

12:00 PM – Lunch Surrounded by Nature

Around midday, we stop for lunch at one of the established resting areas along the trekking route. While you relax, our trekking team will prepare a freshly cooked meal.

Enjoy the peaceful forest atmosphere and take time to recharge before beginning the more demanding part of the ascent. The afternoon section brings a noticeable change in both the vegetation and the mountain scenery.

01:00 PM – Leaving the Rainforest Behind

As the trail climbs higher, the dense forest gradually becomes thinner. The surroundings begin to change from tropical woodland to open mountain vegetation, with sections of rocky ground and steeper uphill paths.

You may notice the air becoming cooler as you gain elevation. Occasional openings in the landscape reveal views toward Senaru Village and the northern coastline of Lombok.

This section requires patience and steady walking, but the scenery becomes increasingly rewarding as you approach the crater rim.

03:00–04:00 PM – Your First View of Segara Anak Lake

After several hours of climbing, you finally arrive at Senaru Crater Rim, approximately 2,641 meters above sea level. The moment you reach the edge of the caldera is one of the most memorable parts of the entire journey.

The landscape suddenly opens to reveal the enormous volcanic crater, with Segara Anak Lake resting far below and Mount Baru Jari rising from within the caldera. Across the crater, the upper slopes of Mount Rinjani create a dramatic mountain backdrop.

Take your time to enjoy the view, capture photographs, and appreciate how far you have climbed. Meanwhile, our porters will prepare the camping equipment and organize the campsite for the evening.

05:30 PM – An Evening Above the Clouds

As the afternoon comes to an end, the atmosphere around the crater rim begins to change. The temperature drops, clouds may drift across the mountains, and the landscape takes on the warm colors of the setting sun.

Find a comfortable place near the campsite and enjoy the incredible scenery. On a clear evening, the distant coastline and neighboring islands may also be visible.

This is a wonderful opportunity to relax after the day's climb and experience the peaceful mountain environment.

06:30 PM – Dinner at the Crater Rim

As darkness settles over the mountain, our team will serve a freshly prepared dinner at the campsite. Enjoy your meal while sharing stories about the day's adventure.

Away from the lights of the villages below, clear skies can offer beautiful views of the stars. After dinner, settle into your tent and rest for the following morning.

Overnight: Camping at Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m).

Day 2 – Senaru Crater Rim to Senaru Village

Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m) → Senaru Village (601 m)

  • Trekking Duration: Approximately 5–6 hours of walking; allow additional time for meals and rest stops.
  • Walking Distance: Approximately 9 km.
  • Elevation Loss: Approximately 2,040 m.
  • Meals: Breakfast & Lunch.
  • Finishing Point: Senaru Village.

05:30 AM – Wake Up Above the Clouds

Your second day begins with an early morning wake-up at the crater rim. Step outside your tent and experience the peaceful atmosphere of Mount Rinjani before the day begins.

As the first light appears, the surrounding mountains gradually emerge from the darkness. The changing colors of the sky create a beautiful contrast with the volcanic landscape.

Depending on the weather, you may see clouds floating beneath the crater rim while the mountain peaks rise above them. Take your time to enjoy the scenery and capture a few final photographs of Segara Anak Lake.

06:30 AM – Breakfast with a Mountain View

Enjoy a warm breakfast and a hot drink prepared by our trekking team. This is your final opportunity to relax at the crater rim before returning to Senaru.

After breakfast, pack your personal belongings and check that nothing has been left behind. Our porters will carefully dismantle the tents, collect the camping equipment, and ensure the campsite is left clean.

At Jou Trekking, we encourage responsible trekking practices to help protect the natural beauty of Mount Rinjani.

07:30 AM – Begin the Descent

Say goodbye to the crater rim and begin your journey back down the mountain. Although descending requires less uphill effort, the steep trail can still be challenging, particularly for your knees and legs.

Your guide will help you maintain a safe and comfortable pace. As you lose elevation, the open mountain landscape gradually gives way to the greener surroundings of the lower slopes.

Along the way, enjoy different perspectives of the scenery you passed during the previous day's climb.

09:30 AM – Back Into the Rainforest

Continue descending until you return to the tropical rainforest. The cooler mountain air gradually becomes warmer as you approach the lower elevations.

Walking beneath the forest canopy provides another opportunity to appreciate the diversity of Mount Rinjani's natural environment. Keep an eye out for wildlife, listen to the sounds of the forest, and enjoy the final hours of your mountain adventure.

We will take short breaks whenever needed.

12:00 PM – Final Lunch on the Mountain

Stop at a suitable resting area for your final trekking lunch. After two days of exploring the mountain, this is a good opportunity to relax and enjoy a final meal prepared by our trekking team.

Once everyone is ready, continue descending toward the Senaru trekking entrance.

01:00–02:00 PM – Finish Your Trek in Senaru

Arrive back at the Senaru trekking entrance, marking the completion of your two-day Mount Rinjani adventure. Our team will arrange your return to Jou Trekking Guesthouse, where you can collect any luggage stored before the trek.

For guests who booked transportation as part of their package, we will arrange the onward transfer to your selected destination in Lombok.

Your trekking experience may be coming to an end, but the memories of the rainforest, volcanic landscapes, and beautiful crater rim views will stay with you long after leaving the mountain.

Thank you for choosing Jou Trekking. We hope to welcome you back to Lombok for another adventure.
